Rice has established a new doctoral program in Systems, Synthetic, and Physical Biology, one of the 21st century's fastest-growing interdisciplinary research fields. With that as a backdrop, I'm going to step out of the history lesson a bit and talk about our current understanding of multicellular organisms, cell biology, and what we call the “central dogma.” Cells and their organization. More than 30 faculty from eight academic departments are participating in SSPB, including program founders Yousif Shamoo, professor of biochemistry and cell biology; Marek Kimmel, professor of statistics and of bioengineering; and Oleg Igoshin, assistant professor of bioengineering.
